The Sgwd yr Eira Waterfall is a remarkable cascade situated along the River Hepste, near the village of Ystradfellte. Its name, which means “waterfall of the snow” in English, refers to the spray that resembles snow in the winter.

This awe-inspiring waterfall is renowned for its unique feature, allowing visitors to walk behind the torrential water curtain. Walking behind the curtain of cascading water provides an extraordinary and immersive experience.

Sgwd yr Eira – A Geological Marvel

Its captivating beauty lies within the geological makeup of the Brecon Beacons. Carved over thousands of years, the waterfall flows gracefully over layers of ancient limestone. Creating a breathtaking display of nature’s power and artistry.

The Magic of Waterfall Formation

The unique characteristic of Sgwd yr Eira is the cave-like structure behind the waterfall. This allows visitors to walk behind the curtain of cascading water. An enchanting feature which is the result of a natural process known as “undercutting.” The sheer force of the water has eroded the softer rock layers underneath the harder top layers. Thus creating a concave structure, the mesmerizing cavern behind the waterfall.
